At the invitation of the Beethoven For Youth Festival,
Professors Sui Xin and Wang Xilan
from the School of Art and Communication at Tongji University, Shanghai,
will present a splendid piano duo concert for us.
In step with the Shanghai Spring · Sharing the harmony of two pianos
When renowned Tongji professors meet piano sounds from Germany, when four-hand piano duets encounter two-piano recitals... These two pianists, deeply rooted in both the stage and the lecture hall, will use their rapport as a bridge and their fingertips as a language to embark on a ‘musical journey through time’ spanning a century on the shores of West Lake.
Two pianos intertwine, four hands harmonise—from Mozart’s graceful elegance to Schubert’s melancholic depth, from Debussy’s impressionistic light and shadow to Shostakovich’s avant-garde edge, culminating in Piazzolla’s *Libertango* to set the venue alight. Classical rigour, impressionist romance, modern tension, Latin passion—each piece a world of its own, each step a new vista. At West Lake Concert Hall, hear the fusion of East and West, hear the echoes of time. “Shanghai Spring Masterpiece · Hangzhou Exclusive Performance” – keep this musical rendezvous and lose yourself in the ultimate romance of the two pianos!
Xin Sui
Master’s supervisor at Tongji University, a young pianist based in Germany, guest artist with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, author of professional teaching materials, and producer of several classic chamber music albums. Active in both performance and academia, she has received numerous honours as an outstanding teacher.
Xilan Wang
Master’s supervisor at Tongji University; PhD from the Münster University of Music in Germany; core member of the National First-Class Undergraduate Curriculum; frequent performer at the Shanghai Spring Festival; accomplished in both solo performance and teaching; author of several authoritative piano textbooks; her music resonates across the nation.
This concert centres on four-hand piano and two-piano performances, two classic ensemble forms, each with its own unique charm: through seamless collaboration and spontaneous interaction, the performers weave melodies and harmonies to create a sublime experience, expressing both intense dramatic tension and subtle auditory nuances, fully showcasing the beauty of collaboration and the profound allure of the musical works.
The programme spans from the classical to the modern era: from the lively and spirited works of Mozart to the melancholic and contemplative Schubert’s ‘Fantasy in F minor’; from the impressionistic play of light and shadow in Debussy’s ‘Petite Suite’ to the avant-garde musical edge of Shostakovich’s ‘Concerto for Two Pianos’, culminating in the passionate Latin flair of Piazzolla’s ‘Libertango’.
This concert takes the audience on a ‘journey through time and space in music’, allowing them to immerse themselves in the evolution of musical language over the past century. Through seamless transitions between diverse styles, it transcends the boundaries of time and culture, unlocking a rich, multi-dimensional and uniquely innovative auditory feast.
